Henning is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, Programme Leader for the Graduate Diploma Conservation Studies, and consultant for Lincoln Conservation.
Henning is a wooden objects conservator with over 35 years of experience working in the public and private sectors and in education. After completing a cabinetmaking apprenticeship and training as objects conservator, he specialised in the conservation of furniture and wooden objects at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. In his early career Henning worked at the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin, the Historic Museum Amsterdam, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
His interest in education subsequently allowed him to share his expertise and guide students at Universities in Germany, and to shape conservation programmes as coordinator at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology in Ireland and at the University of Lincoln. In this capacity he was also invited as visiting lecturer for the conservation training programmes at the Forbidden City, Beijing and the New University, Lisbon.
Pursuing his particular interest in wooden interiors and related historic technology, Henning has for example conducted technical examinations and condition assessments in preparation for conservation treatments in the baroque ‘Goldene Kammer’ - a chapel at St Ursula Church in Cologne, and of an 18th-century marquetry floor at the New Palace in Potsdam. At the Metropolitan Museum Henning had the opportunity to lead the conservation reinstallation of the marquetry panelling of the late 15th-century Gubbio Studiolo. Recently he has been contributing to the ‘Fallen Angels’ project at the quire of Ripon Cathedral where he undertook the technical examination, a cleaning trial and oversaw the cleaning treatment. In his practical capacity Henning has for this project completed the conservation treatment of medieval stalls on-site and of two severely deteriorated misericords in the laboratories of Lincoln Conservation.
